Wow, what a difference a word makes. I read this and thought you meant they were literally going to "run sideways" across NH. It took me a minute to get that you really meant run "crosswise" (across the width of the state), as opposed to run lengthwise (down the length of it). That would certainly have been a challenge to run sideways... tough on the old hip flexors.
